Interaction Design and Children (IDC) Conference 2021 Course: Introducing the CCI UX Playbook

Date and Time: TBA

We encourage practitioners and researchers to come to this course on the recently launched CCI UX Playbook. This course will introduce participants to CCI UX and to the wide range of tools, developed across the community. We will then introduce the Playbook and the use of the Fun Toolkit, Drawing Intervention, the Memoline in a series of practical exercises using materials from children. We will close the session with a look at ethics and equity considering Participatory Design and Inclusion.

What is the UX Playbook?

The Playbook focusses on five industry-leading techniques:

  • Fun Toolkit
  • Ethics Toolkit
  • RAId Toolkit
  • Drawing Intervention
  • MemoLine

Course Description and Purpose

In the course, attendees will be walked through the five tools from the CCI UX Playbook and will be given a chance to use the tools in a set of hands-on activities. Attendees will also be given additional material including checklists and links to further reading. At the end of the course, it is expected that attendees will:

  • Be familiar with the contents of the CCI UX Playbook and be able to locate it and its associated resources
  • Be aware of in which circumstances each of the tools might most appropriately be used
  • Understand that there are other tools and methods available that can be used alongside and in place of the tools described
  • Have practical experience of using several of the tools in a hands on session

This course is ideal for researchers, practitioners and designers who are interested in the research and design of digital environments for children (of all age groups). In past courses, participants included researchers, practitioners, and students. It is assumed that those attending have a basic understanding of HCI methods and/or UX research methods. Outside of that, there are no prerequisites.

Course Outline

The course will last half a day, the outline schedule is:

Introduction (20 mins)

We begin with a 20-minute introduction to CCI UX where participants will be pointed to the wide range of tools, developed across the community. Participant Activity Two (20 mins – hands-on): Participants will use the UX Playbook and its associated resources to evaluate a set of ten children’s drawings using Drawing Intervention – they will then report back.

The course instructors (20 mins) will discuss the findings from the participants and answer questions about these two activities. The MemoLine will be introduced as a tool for longitudinal UX.

Session 2 – Equity and Ethics (50 mins)

Participant Activity Three (20 mins – hands-on): Participants will use the UX Playbook and its associated resources to explore a set of children’s designs – they will then report back .
